Braised Steak and Onions
Ingredients:
1kg Round steak
4 onions, sliced
Oil and butter for frying
Salt and pepper to taste
2 bay leaves
2 tablespoons Gravox
1 litre water
Method:
Cut the round steak into serving portions.
Heat some oil and add some butter in a large saucepan, or pressure cooker, fry the onions, until soft and golden brown.
Add the meat and brown on both sides.
You may have to do this in two batches.
Add salt and pepper to meat. Mix together the gravox with some water, add to pan and pour remaining water onto the meat and onions.
Add the bay leaves and adjust the seasoning.
If sauce is too thick add more water.
Bring to the boil and simmer for about 1 hour, or until the meat is tender.
Alternatively, if using a pressure cooker, place the lid on and wait for it to steam, place top on and simmer for about 20 minutes.
You can add some peeled, cut and salted potatoes to the pan ½ hour before the meat is finished, it saves cooking the potatoes separately.
